Born Ivo Livi, Montand was the son of a Communist father and Catholic mother who fled Mussolini’s Italy for southern France when the boy was two years old. As a young singer, he was discovered by Edith Piaf. In his mature acting roles, he exuded refinement and quiet charm. These two films feature him as a leader in postwar Europe’s complex political landscape, where friends and enemies were hard to differentiate.
