Born in Hong Kong and named after John Wayne (his father’s favorite movie star), Wang blazed a trail for Chinese American filmmakers by creating idiosyncratic works outside the studio system. A genre chameleon who jumped from comedy to drama to mystery to erotica and everything in between, he forged a unique brand of low-key filmic poetry.
