SERIES
September 2019 - September 2021 at the Trylon
The Trylon would not exist without its volunteers. Now, to help celebrate our tenth anniversary, we’re saying thanks by letting them choose the films they’ve long wanted us to show. Screenings will be every other Thursday through May 2020. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

(1982, 35mm, 109m) dir John Carpenter w/Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David. Trylon has shown pretty much all of my favorites throughout the years (shout out to our wonderful programmers!). My pick has been shown at our theater before, but I love it so much I thought it worth screening again. I have a deep […]

(1998, DCP, 110m) dir Vincent Gallo w/Gallo, Christina Ricci, Ben Gazzarra. After doing time, Billy Brown finds a place to belong in his home town when Layla taps into his life, spanning time. -Ann Romine, box office volunteer since January 2010 7:00
(1980, DCP, 96m) dir Robert Greenwald w/Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck. Selected by Maria Gomez, box office volunteer since February 2010. 7:00
(2000, DCP, 124m) dir Gina Prince-Bythewood w/Omar Epps, Sanaa Lathan, Glenndon Chatman. Love & Basketball excels on both sides of the ampersand: a great romance, expressed as tenderly as Maxwell singing “This Woman’s Work” on the soundtrack; a great sports drama, exploring lack of opportunity in the pre-WNBA era. -Geoffrey Stueven, box office volunteer since […]
(1984, DCP, 147m) dir Wim Wenders w/Harry Dean Stanton, Natassja Kinski, Dean Stockwell. “Paris, Texas is something like a western, something like a ghost story, and a powerful film about reckoning with regret, with a rare—and perfect—lead performance from one of film’s great character actors, Harry Dean Stanton.” -Greg Hunter, box office volunteer since January […]
(1971, DCP, 91m) dir Peter Watkins w/Patrick Boland, Kent Foreman, Carmen Argenziano. “Punishment Park is a Molotov cocktail of a pseudo-documentary. Dissenters, draft dodgers, and other ‘undesirables’ are hunted across a California desert by the soldiers from a conservative, violent police state. It doesn’t get much timelier!” —Matt Levine, box office volunteer since July 2010 […]
(1965, 35mm, 93m) dir Kevin Brownlow, Andrew Mollo w/Pauline Murray, Sebastian Shaw, Bart Allison. “Two British teenagers began shooting this movie on weekends, with whatever volunteers they could find and whatever film stock they could scrounge. Seven years later they completed one of the most sophisticated films about foreign occupation ever made.” -Michael Popham, box […]
(2006, 35mm, 113m) dir Andrea Arnold w/Kate Dickle, Tony Curran, Martin Compston. “I chose Red Road because of the atmosphere, suspense, & the pace of it.” -George Hick, box office volunteer since March 2012. 7:00
(1973, 35mm, 105m) dir Douglas Hickox w/Vincent Price, Diana Rigg, Ian Hendry. “Vincent Price as a washed up Shakespearean actor bent out of shape due to poor reviews so he wreaks havoc on the critics, murdering them one at a time while playing the individual roles they dissed. Yas! I’ve wanted to see this one […]
(1955, DCP, 125m) dir Satyajit Ray w/Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee. “I find movies that draw compelling insights from the familiar to be particularly moving. I am not sure any film evokes the dual joy and sadness of the human experience better than Satyajit Ray’s simple and elegant meditation on childhood, family, and loss. […]
(1987, DCP, 107m) dir Bruce Robinson w/Richard E. Grant, Paul McGann. “Few films can navigate the arena of the unwell successfully, but Withnail & I triumphs in tragedy and wit through an exploration of a booze-soaked and complex friendship that’s perfectly written, and expertly acted — Richard E. Grant’s performance is a singular tour de […]
