Mai Zetterling was an actor for nearly twenty years before she directed her first feature. As a Swedish expatriate living at times in England and France, Zetterling provided a detached view into modern European culture through her films. Diving deep into loneliness, isolation, sexuality, motherhood, and consumerism, Zetterling’s films are wondrously provocative—but have been overshadowed by the male-dominated art cinema of the 1960s.
