POLIZIOTTESCHI: ITALIAN CRIME FILMS IN THE YEARS OF LEAD

February at the Trylon

By the early 1970s, violence had become commonplace in Italian politics. Assassinations, kidnappings, and car bombs were deployed as neo-fascists and far-rightists battled far-left activists for power. Reflecting this carnage, the hundreds of Italian crime films made in that period used techniques similar to those seen in 1960s spaghetti westerns. This month we present four of our favorites.

INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN ABOVE SUSPICION

(1973, 35mm, 111m) dir Sergio Sollima w/Oliver Reed, Fabio Testi, Paola Pitagora. After prison warden Cipriani’s (Reed) wife is abducted, the kidnappers demand that he release a notorious convict, Ruiz (Testi). This gripping procedural follows misogynistic and homophobic Captain Tony Saitta (Whitman) as he attempts to find the person who killed his sister. It features one of cinema’s greatest car chases.
