Emerging young Shakespearean stage actor O’Toole shot to film stardom in 1962 playing T. E. Lawrence. His riveting blue eyes, languid voice and physical magnetism were key to his appeal. Excessive drinking and stomach cancer nearly killed him in the 1970s, but he returned with gusto in the early 1980s.
