In late 1950s Mexico, a masked wrestler (luchador enmascarado) named El Santo made his first film, changing wrestling and Mexican matinee cinema forever. Santo would go on to star in fifty-four movies over the next twenty-five years, inspiring other films such as the highly entertaining and bonkers The Batwoman.

SANTO CONTRA HOMBRES INFERNALES

(1961, DCP, 77m, Spanish w/English subtitles) dirs Joselito Rodríguez, Enrique Zambrano w/El Santo, Joaquín Cordero, Gina Romand. Santo’s first cinematic appearance sees him working with the police to track down drug smugglers. Shot in Cuba immediately before the revolution, the film was wildly successful. New Restoration!
