Thieves, hustlers, cons, and cops—director Jules Dassin used these shadowy archetypes in a string of film noir classics. He was blacklisted after being reported to the House Un-American Affairs Committee by his Hollywood peers Edward Dmytryk and Frank Tuttle. Dassin then went to Europe, where he continued exploring his world of betrayal, cruelty, and survival.
