However, after a bitter falling-out with his longtime collaborator and star Toshiro Mifune, the director suffered from doubts and depression. Through that struggle, he found a new, epic scope and poetic vision that yielded some of his grandest pictures.

A petty thief shares a resemblance with a samurai warlord and becomes his double. Upon the warlord’s death, the double must rule in his absence.
