Winter at the Heights

Rinky-dink studios such as Eagle-Lion, Republic, and Monogram had names that were meant to impress but were as thin as a $10 suit. They made up Hollywood’s Poverty Row, a tag the major studios hung on their déclassé cousins. But when it came to crime, Poverty Row’s noirs could be as sharp as a shiv, with efficient plots full of nasty twists.
