Troubled by alcoholism and prone to bouts of rage, Sam Peckinpah was at times a brusque tyrant, feuding with his producers and crew. But at other times he was quiet and thoughtful. His films are, by turns, melancholy, intellectual, and savage. They are also among the most influential American movies of the second half of the 20th century.
