Event Navigation
Under the Blue Sky (1979) was the first major Thai film featuring Hmong characters played by Thai actors, Noppol Gomarachun and Naowarat Yuktanun. Thanks to the Hmong dubbed version by S.T. Universal Videos in 1992, the film became an instant classic for the newly arrived Hmong refugees of the 80’s and 90’s. This novel adapted movie tells the love story of a Hmong university student Lis Ceeb (Gomarachun) and Thai classmate Maiv Xis (Yuktanun). Soon after marriage, they move to the traditional home village of Lis Ceeb, in hopes of bringing education to improve the quality of life for his fellow Hmong people. Their relationship became challenged by their intercultural marriage, violence brought on by the opium trade, and the heart struggles of a marriage.
The film will be shown in the Hmong dubbed version by S.T. Universal Videos. The screening is followed by a panel discussion on Hmong identities with guest Steve Thao of S.T. Universal Videos and Board Director, Billy Lor of Hey Billy!
