Video store employee Cheryl (Dunye) sets out to make a documentary on the Watermelon Woman (Bronson), an actress who specialized in “mammy” roles for silent Hollywood productions. Dunye’s film, the first feature directed by a Black lesbian, is funny, insightful, and essential.
