(1982, 35mm, 109m) dir John Carpenter w/Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David.
Trylon has shown pretty much all of my favorites throughout the years (shout out to our wonderful programmers!). My pick has been shown at our theater before, but I love it so much I thought it worth screening again. I have a deep love for a good monster movie- necessary ingredients include an interesting monster with rules and logic to its threat and behaviors, and well-done practical effects. Rob Bottin nearly killed himself making this film at age 22, and it’s scarier and more disgusting than any CG will ever be. Upon its release, critics said that the creature effects detracted from the viewer being able to relate to the characters, but I think Kurt Russell’s luxurious hair and beard more than make up for that.
