The Naked Spur

(1953, 91m) dir Anthony Mann w/James Stewart, Janet Leigh, Robert Ryan. “By the time Anthony Mann and James Stewart made The Naked Spur in 1953, they’d set the formula for their Westerns: man with shady past involves himself in righting a moral situation while maybe not being entirely moral and forthright himself. In this, my favorite of the five, you toss in Janet Leigh, some Robert Ryan, a little Ralph Meeker (there are only five speaking parts!) and you have one of the most taut films the world knows.” —Ted Harwood, Trylon volunteer since 2016
