The Mosquito Coast

Friday, September 22–Sunday, September 24

(1986, DCP, 117m) w/Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, River Phoenix. Arrogant inventor Allie Fox (Ford) brings his family into the jungle and willfully ignores the consequences of his actions as they rain down on those near him. This examination of the caustic nature of American exceptionalism and capitalism is disturbing but invigorating.

For Perisphere, Michael Wellvang discusses where The Mosquito Coast fits into the “We used to be a proper country” subgenre, and Lucas Hardwick writes about how Allie Fox’s “Wake up Sheeple” mentality drives his family to the brink of civilization and beyond.
