The More the Merrier

(1943, 104m) dir George Stevens w/Jean Arthur, Joel McCrea, Charles Coburn. “The More the Merrier, set amidst a severe housing shortage in Washington, DC, is top-drawer screwball comedy. Jean Arthur is perfection (it is, shockingly, the only performance that earned her an Oscar nomination). She’s charming and hilarious and, dare I say it, even sexy! From the director of Shane and Giant, this comedy, the last that George Stevens made, is an essential. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead! “—Kim Mancini, Trylon volunteer since 2017
