THE GIRLS

Sunday, September 3–Tuesday, September 5

(1968, DCP, 100m, Swedish w/English subtitles) dir Mai Zetterling w/Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom. Three women find their lives mirrored in a production of Lysistrata performed before dumbfounded audiences. Derided as overambitious or simply ignored upon its release in 1968, The Girls opened the First Festival of Women’s Films in 1972 and is now heralded as an early feminist masterwork. New Restoration!

For Perisphere, Courtney Kowalke writes on gender, messy plots, and Mai Zetterling’s career, and Veda Lawrence approaches the impact (or lack thereof) of feminist protests in The Girls.
