The Earrings Of Madame De . . . In 35mm
Sunday, June 16–Tuesday, June 18
(1953, 105m, French w/English subtitles) dir Max Ophüls w/Danielle Darrieux, Charles Boyer, Vittorio De Sica. An aristocratic woman known only as “Madame de . . .” (Darrieux) sells a pair of earrings given to her by her husband (Boyer) as a wedding gift. As the earrings pass hands, the unintended consequences lead to a domino effect of tragedy. Ophüls’s opening shot (one of many long uncut takes in the film) is one of the most understated but elegant long takes ever put to celluloid.
