Friday, May 2–Sunday, May 4

(1956, 116m, Japanese w/English subtitles) dir Kon Ichikawa w/Rentarô Mikuni, Shôji Yasui, Tatsuya Mihashi. As the Japanese army falters in Burma, harpist Mizushima (Yasui) is tasked with convincing Japanese soldiers in a cave to surrender. Akira Ifukube’s powerful score and Ichikawa’s superb direction make for one of the great humanist films of the postwar era. New Restoration!
