A promising young doctor loses everything due to her conflict with the totalitarian Soviet regime – her career, her love for life, and even her mother’s instinct, when she denies breast milk to her baby. However, the grown-up daughter becomes the mother’s only supporter as she tries to help ease her mother’s depression and learns how to live in the repressive Soviet regime. The stories of mother and daughter begin in occupied Soviet Latvia in 1945 and continue through the Soviet Union collapse in 1989.
