RIGHTING WRONGS (AKA ABOVE THE LAW)

(1986, 35mm, 85m) dir Corey Yuen w/Biao Yuen, Cynthia Rothrock, Melvin Wong.
Over the course of 7 years I watched hundreds of Hong Kong films thanks to Asian Media Access and their “Cinema With Passion” series. Every week brought a new cinematic surprise. Some of the movies were amazing, some confounding, very few were boring. Nothing has had a bigger impact on my filmgoing taste. As a tribute to Asian Media Access I’m picked one of the first movies I saw there, Righting Wrongs (aka Above The Law) starring two of Hong Kong’s most under-appreciated mid–80s stars.
The incredible Yuen Biao gets a rare chance to step out from Jackie Chan’s shadow as an angry lawyer out to single-handedly beat down a gang of criminals and Cynthia Rothrock is a cop who won’t let Biao take the law into his own hands. They are on a collision course…with explosive results! Righting Wrongs features all the best parts of mid–80s Hong Kong films: amazing stunts, over-the-top melodrama, goofy jokes, and a crazy ending.
