Making Mr. Right in 35mm

Thursday, May 22

(1987, 100m) dir Susan Seidelman, w/ John Malkovich, Ann Magnuson, Laurie Metcalf, Polly Bergen, Harsh Nayyar. An emotionally repressed scientist (Malkovich) builds his look-alike automaton Ulysses (Malkovich) to go forth and colonize outer space. Instead, his automaton falls in love with Frankie (Magnuson), the publicist hired to convince the people that this whole shebang is not profoundly dystopian. Antics ensue.

This screening was inspired by Marya E. Gates, author of CINEMA HER WAY: VISIONARY FEMALE DIRECTORS IN THEIR OWN WORDS (Rizzoli, 2025), a compendium of original interviews with 19 legendary female filmmakers—including Julie Dash, Jane Campion, Cheryl Dunye, Lizzie Borden, Mira Nair, Karyn Kusama, Isabel Sandoval, and Susan Seidelman.
