(1970, 35mm, 87m) dir Brian De Palma w/Robert De Niro, Allen Garfield, Lara Parker. Upon returning home, Vietnam vet Jon Rubin (De Niro) directs an avant-garde voyeuristic porno film and then joins an acting troupe of militant Black activists—at which point the film switches from comedy to scorching social commentary and features one of the most intense sequences in cinema. Be Black, Baby. These screenings of the only known 35mm print are presented in partnership with the Cult Film Collective.

For Perisphere, Nick Kouhi reflects on how Jon Rubin compares to the rest of Robert De Niro’s filmography, and Courtney Kowalke challenges the “satirical” nature of Hi, Mom!’s Be Black, Baby! sequence.
