Heimat is a Space in Time

Thursday, September 25

(2019, 218m) dir Thomas Heise. In his award-winning film–Best German Documentary, 2019, Main Prize International Film Festival Vision du Réel 2019, Chantal Akerman Prize 2019 and many more–German filmmaker Thomas Heise shares the stories of three generations of his family from the beginning of the 20th century to the Fall of the Wall. Heimat is a Space in Time defies easy description. It is an understated epic that brilliantly marries the written word, image, and sound design. The unspoken message is that the past, even as those who remember it slip away, remains with us. Thomas Heise died in 2024. He visited the Twin Cities for showings of his films at the Walker Art Center. This event also happens in memory of his life and work.

The film screening is followed by an audience discussion with Cornelia Klauß, head of the section film and media art of the German Academy of Arts and film scholar Hilde Hoffmann (Bochum).
