Distant Voices, Still Lives
Friday, September 18–Sunday, September 20
(1988, 84m) dir Terence Davies w/Pete Postlethwaite, Freda Dowie, Dean Williams, Nathan Walsh. Made up of two parts and shot two years apart, the film first follows the Davies family under the threat of a vulgar and abusive father (a terrifying Postlethwaite) and then catches up with them later in life as they recapture what had been trampled underfoot. Aglow with the music of Julie London and Peter Pears, Distant is a breathtaking masterpiece.
