Christ Stopped at Eboli

Friday, September 11–Sunday, September 13

(1979, 220m, Italian w/English subtitles) dir Francesco Rosi w/Gian Maria Volontè, Paolo Bonacelli, Lea Massari. Artist Carlo Levi (Volontè) is exiled by Mussolini’s fascists to an impoverished town in southern Italy. The film is a magnificent rumination on the urban-rural divide, inequality, and power. Originally made for Italian television in four 55-minute parts, it was cut in half for its 1980 US release. We are finally able to show Rosi’s uncut epic as it was intended.
