Christ Stopped at Eboli

(1979, 220m, Italian w/English subtitles) dir Francesco Rosi w/Gian Maria Volontè, Paolo Bonacelli, Lea Massari. Artist Carlo Levi (Volontè) is exiled by Mussolini’s fascists to an impoverished town in southern Italy. The film is a magnificent rumination on the urban-rural divide, inequality, and power. Originally made for Italian television in four 55-minute parts, it was cut in half for its 1980 US release. We are finally able to show Rosi’s uncut epic as it was intended. There will be an intermission of 10-15min at the halfway point.
