Branded To Kill

Sunday, January 28–Tuesday, January 30

(1967, DCP, 91m, Japanese w/English subtitles) dir Seijun Suzuki w/Jô Shishido, Mariko Ogawa, Annu Mari. Hanada (Shishido), a boiling-rice-sniffing hit man, hunts and gets hunted in the underground world of ranked assassins. This wildly experimental yakuza film got Suzuki fired and blacklisted from the film industry for a decade.

At Perisphere, Yuval Klein lays out how the theme of Inadequacy permeates Seijun Suzuki’s blacklisted 1967 yakuza film.
