Bandits Vs. Samurai Squadron

(1978, 35mm, 163m, Japanese w/English subtitles) dir Hideo Gosha w/Tatsuya Nakadai, Kôshirô Matsumoto, Shima Iwashita. This bloody epic focuses on an ex-samurai, Kumokiri Nizaemon (Nakadai), and a strong, resourceful prostitute, Chiyo (Iwashita), who team up with a clan of bandits to rob the castle of Kumokiri’s corrupt former clan. Set against a backdrop of violence and sex, Gosha’s film becomes a thoughtful meditation on honor and greed.
