Lance Corporals Blake and Schofield (Chapman, MacKay) are assigned to deliver a message to prevent a battalion from heading over a wall into No Man’s Land and falling into a trap set by the Germans. Created with the conceit that the entire film is a single tracking shot (there are actually 34 cuts), 1917 could be written off as a gimmick, but the fact that it works makes it all the more impressive—especially the nighttime crane shot.
