The Art of Insurgence: '80s Animated Sci-Fantasy

February at the Trylon

In the mid-1970s, just as Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons began to find their fandoms, a collection of French comic illustrators published the extremely graphic magazine Métal Hurlant (Heavy Metal in the US). At the same time, in Japan, England, and eastern Europe, other artists were exploring similar ideas of genre-bending tales in animation. These outlaw animators coalesced in the 1980s from all over the world, creating an insurgence of sci-fantasy animation that still dominates.
