The Ballad of Kinuyo Tanaka

May at the Trylon

Although Tanaka was one of Japan’s earliest female directors, it is her on-screen performances that are the reason she is largely known today. Working with iconic Japanese directors, like Ozu and Mizoguchi, over three decades, she shaped a modern, subtle technique in contrast to the highly stylized performances that defined the era.
