Friday November 10, 9:30pm

(DCP, 97m) Various filmmakers in attendance. A collection of music videos and short documentaries, the Sound Unseen Shorts Programs features artists, filmmakers, and musicians making stunning and sometimes confounding narratives into dazzling visuals, whereas our short documentaries find subjects celebrating music, art and unpredictable stories in everyday life.

BAD BROTHER

(2017, 5m) dir Hugo Jouxtel, France. North American Premiere. A young man is armed and on the run. He’s hiding at a motel with his eight-year-old sister. When the police find them, he does his best to distract her attention from the inevitable dramatic outcome.

THE BLUE JET

(2015, 15m) dir Lawrence Lam, Canada. Midwest Premiere. Baptized in blue denim, Blue Jet is a rebellious radio DJ who broadcasts forbidden rock n’ roll in 1970’s Taiwan. The country has been under martial law for the past two decades, and the KMT Secret Youth Police seek out the longhaired instigators of “hippie” culture. Hear the untold story of a legend, remembered by an old fan who recalls his first time walking on the wild side.

THE RAGMAN: A HOBO’S STORY UNTOLD

A collaboration of professional musicians and record producers ensues with one sole purpose: to bring to life the spirit known as The Ragman.

THE WAS

(2016, 14m) dir Soda Jerk, Australia. Midwest Premiere. A sample-based video for now, about the time before now. Part experimental film, part music video and concept album, ‘The Was‘ is the collaborative meeting of Australian sample artists Soda_Jerk and The Avalanches. Constructed from over a hundred rotoscoped film samples, ‘The Was‘ is a de/tour de/force through the neighborhoods of collective memory.

WHISTLE, HAWK & SPIT

(2016, 5m) dir Jed Schlegelmilch, USA. MN Premiere. The band Hot Coffin performs in an old movie theatre and is being watched by ‘creeps’ wearing masks that resemble the band’s likeness.
